Paul Morgan Architects - Monograph
Trunk House
Paul Morgan Architects
From survival pods for a climate-stressed Australia of the near future, to buildings sculpted to respond to the environment that surrounds them, the work of Paul Morgan Architects is a highly unconventional blend of science fiction, sustainability and speculation. Despite operating in a mode far from the architectural norm, however, the practice has received a slew of awards in the decade since its inception, including the Robin Boyd Award for Residential Buildings.
This book, the first volume in Uro's minimono series, documents a selection of Paul Morgan Architects’ most significant public and private commissions, including its multi-award winning residential work and its more recent educational and institutional design. Critical contributions include writing by Kristin Feireiss, co-founder of the architectural forum Aedes in Berlin and a former director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute, Conrad Hamann, author and architectural historian, and Dr Vivian Mitsogianni, Associate Professor in Architecture at RMIT University.
Richly illustrated with photography by Peter Bennetts as well as the practice’s own drawings and visualisations, the book provides a deep insight into both the work and the processes behind this maverick Australian architecture practice.

Furniture, Structure, Infrastructure
NMBW Architecture Studio
This book is a collection of urban research and architectural projects by award-winning architects Nigel Bertram / NMBW Architecture Studio, using observation as a design tool and design as an observational method. Through this process, a position on the making of architecture and on the role of architecture within the wider urban environment is established; embracing the full messy reality of the present, finding delight in the everyday and developing sensitivity to a range of found environments. By taking pre-existing conditions seriously, each project, architectural or analytical, large or small, becomes understood as the strategic renovation of a continuing state.

Karri Loop House Margaret River
MORQ
Karri Loop House by MORQ is Houses #95 cover story. This family home in Margaret River Western Australia was the first project i photographed in 2013. Lyn Churchill has written the feature.
And surely you have seen, in the darkness of the innermost rooms of these huge buildings, to which sunlight never penetrates, how the gold leaf of of a sliding door or screen will pick up a distant glimmer from the garden, then suddenly send forth an etheral glow, a faint goldern light cast into the enveloping darkness, like the glow upon the horizon at sunset. Junichiro Tanizaki, In Praise of Shadows (1977)
Fiona Dunin/FMD Architects Bayside Residence also features in this issue with words by Toby Horrocks. Simple but rich timber battens define the exterior of this addition for a family. Lovely!

ARCHITECTURE REVIEW RESIDENTIAL 11 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2011 COVER STORY
Architecture Review Australia Residential #11 hits newstands today with NMBW Architecture Studio's Curlewis House on the cover. As well as Curlewis I photographed iph's Coleman House and Muir Mendes's Law Street House for this special issue. Curlewis House, on the Bellarine Penisular, responds to a difficult site, embracing the landscape to produce generous, comfortably contained architecture. Muir Mendes's Law Street house in South Melbourne, built by the architects for themselves over almost 5 years of weekends, reveals their love for the suburb with a nod to Álvaro Siza. iph's Coleman house in Perth's City Beach uses a unique wedge shape design and was a collaboratation with artists, making for a surprisingly flexible family home.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AUSTRALIA NO/127 COVER STORY
That's HASSELL landscape architect Rocelyn Slee and my ever able assistant - architect Nils Koenning on the cover of the latest LAA. Finding people to demonstrate the activation of the Wesley Quarter landscape proved difficult so it came down to Rocelyn and Nils sitting in.
Wesley Quarter, on the corner of Hay and William Streets in Perth upgrades the laneway and public realm around the Wesley Church. Simple forms and interfaces, such as sandstone seating, granite paving, shade trees and lighting make the laneway and surrounds clear and logical. These new works merge seamlessly into the existing urban fabric, ‘encourag(ing) a range of uses, and offers a resting place adjacent to Hay Street’s bustling retail precinct’.

Time & Tide; The islands of Tuvalu
Tuvalu 1998-present
Tuvalu is a Pacific nation of low lying coral atolls and islands whose existence is threatened by climate change and rising sea levels. This large format photographic essay will show the world what will surely be lost as sea levels rise: a unique culture and environment irrevocably erased. This moody and evocative portrait of the tiny island nation is a foray into previously undocumented territory – it is the kind of venture Lonely Planet has pioneered.
Photographed by Peter Bennetts with text and interviews by Tony Wheeler, Time & Tide is a serenely beautiful and poignant story of our times.
More than a portrait of a nation in crisis or a cultural document, this book articulates the flourishing optimism of a people.

New Conversations with an Old Landscape: Landscape Architecture in Contemporary Australia
This work explores the work of landscape architects in Australia since the 1960s. It describes how landscape architects are, as contemporary Australians, listening more closely to the language of the landcape and how they are designing new landscapes in response. These designed landscapes manifest "new conversations" between the land and its people, from the coast to the outback, the city and the suburbs. These works have their own story and meaning; they tell us something of Australia and how contemporary Australians live.
